The former Newgate resident Winning Rupert, who now stands at Grandview Stud in Queensland after five seasons in the Hunter Valley, had his first Hong Kong winner on Wednesday when the 4-year-old Australian-bred gelding Prime Mortar was wound up late to win the 1200-metre Great George H. at Happy Valley. The horse is trained by Jimmy Ting and was ridden on Wednesday by Derek Leung.
Prime Mortar was exported to Hong Kong in late 2021. Bred by Woodside Park, he was consigned by that operation to the 2020 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale where he sold to Upper Bloodstock for $175,000. The gelding has now had six starts in Hong Kong for a win and placing.
