It's a long way to travel for just one ride, but Todd Pannell is hoping his Boxing Day dash from Adelaide to Brisbane will pay off in spades.
South Australia's reigning premiership winner will head north to reunite with Will Clarken-trained four-year-old Beau Rossa in the Listed Falvelon Quality (1200m) at Doomben on Sunday.
Pannell has a strong affiliation with the rising gelding but hasn't ridden Beau Rossa since August - with Linda Meech installed during the Melbourne spring after COVID border restrictions prevented Pannell from riding in Victoria.
"I've always had a big opinion of this horse, from day one he's always shown a lot of ability," Pannell said.
"I've won on him four times; our best win was that Group 2 at Morphettville during the (Autumn) Carnival, obviously really looking forward to what this horse is going to do in the future."
Beau Rossa is currently the second favourite to take out the $140,000 Falvelon Quality, a $4.80 chance with Sportsbet behind the Tony Gollan-trained Zoustyle, with both horses aiming to compete at the Magic Millions Race Day on the Gold Coast on January 15.
"That's probably going to be his grand final for the summer months," Pannell said.
"It looks like he's settled in well going the Sydney direction or the Queensland direction, it looks like he's already adapted to that going, so (I'm) really, really looking forward to the future.
"We've got a stablehand looking after him over there, Will Clarken was able to go over there (Sydney) to watch him trial, that was good for him.
"(I'm) really looking forward to him running there, all goes well, and he gets through that race well he'll eventually move onto the Snippets."
Pannell will return to Adelaide before again heading north to ride Beau Rossa in the Magic Millions Snippets.
"Me going over there on Boxing Day's sort of a hit-run mission," Pannell said.
"Next time I go in January I'll go a couple of days before and see him, definitely give him a pat and a carrot.
"He's starting to grow into himself now, putting it all together, and he's got more to offer and more potential, which is exciting."
