Extremely Lucky burst onto the scene during his second racing preparation, but trainer Will Clarken is happy to temper expectations ahead of the four-year-old gelding's return to racing in the new year.
The son of Extreme Choice sprouted wings to climb over the top of his rivals and win the Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville in July, before a third placing in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1100m) at Moonee Valley, but was then disappointing in his first crack at G1 level in the Moir Stakes (1000m).
"Obviously we had a huge amount of hype on the horse last prep and he only let us down once I guess," Clarken said.
"The form out of that race at The Valley when Bella Nipotina beat him is obviously good - two Group 1 winners ended up coming out of the race."
Extremely Lucky is now back in work and Clarken says he's happy to play a patient game when it comes to placing his emerging sprinting talent over the coming months.
"He actually came back yesterday, he's put on a lot of weight," Clarken said.
"There is no goal for him this preparation, he'll just be kicking off in Adelaide in a normal race or kick off in Melbourne on a Saturday and we'll see where he lies. He's still eight-10 weeks away from racing.
"He struck those two strange Valley tracks in a row, I just want to get his confidence back up and we'll guide him through a preparation."
